This article is for you if you love reading books. If you are moving to Spain, there are many new things to learn. The language. The culture. Cultural communication. Practical things, moving house, school. Maybe you would like to buy property. This article provides you with some books that are definitely worth reading when moving to Spain.

1. Living and working in Spain - David Hampshire

Since many years this is the basic book people read to prepare themselves to move to Spain. A must-read if you plan to move to Spain.

Living and Working in Spain

2. Moving to Spain with children - Lisa Sadleir

There are some eyeopeners in this book that make you think about topics like timing, learning Spanish, which school to choose plus practical information about the public health system and NIE. It´s easy to read and written by a British lady who lives close to Malaga.

3. Buying a property in Spain - Anthony I. Foster

During the crisis house prices fell by approximately 30%. Now that the economy is coming up again and prices are still low, more and more foreigners are interested in buying property. If you´d like to know more about the process of buying a property in Spain, I can recommend this book to you. It´s easy to read and you get a good overview of how the whole buying process works in Spain.

The Complete Guide to Buying a Property in Spain: 10th Edition

4. Ghosts of Spain - Giles Tremlett

In 2009 I attended a presentation by Giles Tremlett. I bought his book (and he signed it, making it even more special). As a journalist and curious about everything around him, Tremlett tells stories about people he interviewed as well as stories about the history and cultural background of Spain. From Franco, King Juan Carlos to the tourism and bikinis to the independent feeling of the Basque country and Catalonia. He explores what makes the Catalans, Basques and Gallegos different. Warning: this book is only a must-read if you have a thirst for knowing more about culture, history, politics and details. If so, yes: it´s recommended.

5. Learn Spanish - best guide to start talking Spanish right now

Useful guide if you need to learn some basic Spanish urgently.

6. Dele A1, B1, B2

Some people want an official qualification in Spanish, internationally recognised. They study for the DELE, Diploma Español como Lengua Extranjera, monitored by the Instituto Cervantes. I did one of the exams as well. These are the books to use in order to prepare for a Dele-exam.

You can choose between the following levels:

Level A1 or A2 - Beginners level

Preparacion Dele: Libro + CD - A1 - New Edition in Colour (2010)

Preparacion Dele: Libro + CD (2) - A2 - Edition in Colour(2010)

or

Level B1 or B2 - Intermediate level

Preparacion Dele: Libro + CD - B1 (New Edition 2013)

Preparacion Dele: Libro + CD - B2 (2014 Edition)

or

Level C1 or C2 - Advanced level

Preparacion Dele: Libro + CD - C1 (2012 Edition)

Preparacion Dele: Libro + CD - C2 (2012 Edition)

7. Cultures & organizations - software of the mind - Hofstede, Hofstede & Minkov

If you are moving abroad, you probably want to find out more about cross-cultural communication. This is one of the books I recommend if you are interested in different cultures and organizations. It´s based on research on people from different nationalities. You´ll get an overview of the 6 concepts they identify and you can relate them to Spain and your own country as well as other countries. However, it is not an easy how-to-do-book, it´s really for those interested in the main concepts and background of other cultures.

8. Breaking Out of Beginner´s Spanish - Joseph Keenan

I would almost say it is a book to coach you in learning Spanish. It is interesting to read especially if you are not a beginner. Just reading the introduction gives you so much ´ganas´ to learn or improve your Spanish. This book is definitely worth reading, especially if you want to learn beyond what you´ll learn in a Spanish course.

9. Verbos conjugados en español

I use this book as a back-up to improve my knowledge of Spanish verbs. It´s a good overview.

10. Career in your suitcase - Jo Parfitt

When I arrived in Madrid, I had no idea what to do. I wanted to start a new career. This book gave me some ideas to start afresh as an entrepreneur.

A Career in Your Suitcase - A Practical Guide to Creating Meaningful Work... Anywhere

Do you know a great book that´s missing from this list? Please let me know. I am eager to learn about other good books to read when moving to Spain.
